Overview: The Mate is often the second person
in command aboard a Tug or OSV.
There are numerous designations of
Mate, i.e. 100 Ton, 200 Ton, 500
Ton, 1600 Ton and Third Mate
Unlimited. Graduates of the
Workboat Academy hold a 500 Ton
(Ocean) and a 1600 Ton (Near
Coastal) License with full STCW.
We highly recommend that you review
all of the different Mate
Endorsements prior to choosing your
route.

| The Hawsepipe Route: This route to a Mate, requires that you join
the Merchant Marine as an Ordinary
Seaman and work your way up the
Ladder. The minimum sea-time
requirements are listed on our
AB page. After accruing
three years of sea-time (6 months of
which was as an Able Seaman) you
have enough sea-time to sit for your
Mate License.
Unfortunately, you will still
need to take approximately 20
(twenty) weeks of Training. Click here to view the AB to Mate training requirements.. and make

Upon completion of the STCW
training requirements listed on our
AB to Mate page, you will be
approved to sit for your USCG
License.

| Academy Route: There are currently six Maritime
Academies that offer a Third Mate
Unlimited License with a B.S. Degree
in numerous areas. The
Workboat Academy highly recommends
this route to becoming an officer,
as not only will you have an
unlimited Mate License, you will
also have a degree education for
when / or if you decide to end your
sea-going career.
